Unexpected Blessings

I never thought when God called me to serve at the Prayer Center what a blessing it would turn out to be in my life.

Ever since I was little, encouragement has always been one of my spiritual gifts. I can remember compiling a list of encouraging scripture verses on Microsoft Word, printing them out, cutting them up, and taping them all over the house. From computer monitors to headboards to picture frames, nothing was safe from my little strips of white. I never dreamed that one day I would get to pray for others and write notes of encouragement as a job. What a privelege!

Through my service at the Prayer Center, I have learned compassion and how to bear the burdens of my brothers and sisters-in-Christ. I have learned sensitivity to the Holy Spirit and how to follow His leading when sharing scripture and administering comfort to hurting hearts. I have gained endurance and self-discipline in my personal prayer life as well. Before I came here, 15-minute prayers were a struggle. Now I can spend two hours in prayer without breaking a spiritual sweat. But most importantly, I have learned the importance of prayer in maintaining unity within the body of Christ.

In Galatians 6:1-4, Paul calls us to bear one another's burdens in love and humility. And what better way to do this than through prayer?

Jealousy

Just like any other students, we always want to have good grades and leave great impressions/image in professors' thoughts. However, reality is not exactly what we hope it to be. There are various ranges of people; some of them are fast learners and some are slow learners.

Is it OK for us to have hatred feelings toward people that constantly seem to be doing better than us? In James 3, verses 14 and 15 says: "But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic." Clearly, jealousy and selfishnes are excluded from the knowledge and wisdom God intended us to possess. Nevertheless, one may ask if we stop comparing and wanting to be at their level, how can we improve ourselves? The answer to that is doing it with a Christian perspective and using the Bible as our guide.

We must look up to what good others have achieved, be happy for them, and be happy for what we have. It will not only make life more meaningful, but it can also help us to draw each other closer and eventually all closer to God.

Brothers and Sisters in Christ, we are all intelligent and hard workers. I pray for our happiness in life and that the Lord will be present in every step we make.

God bless.

How Do We Value God?

I wrote this essay shortly after I came to Liberty. I hope it will encourage us brothers and sisters.

Have you ever think of God and the role he plays in your life? Or you just go through your lives trying to find the greatest benefit that you can earn from the things around you, such as excelling academically, win your favorite sports, write your beloved stories, and so on. How do we precede God in our lives?

You say you are a Christian, but does that really mean anything to you? Or is it just because you go to church every Sunday and feel the presence of God at the moment you hear your favorite worship song. Or maybe, you “think” that you are living your Christian life because the prayer you whispered has been answered. Do we see God in our lives only in the times of our struggle, anxiety, trials, problems, heartbreak, and dissatisfaction? Or we see Him in the opposite ways such as when we earn an “A” in our Economics class and say “God is great” without really meditating the words we say. Or when we earn a raise from our job, and say, “God is good.” Well, yeah maybe at the moment, our emotion subconsciously made us say these things because “maybe” it only becomes a norm, “maybe” a ROUTINE.

As you are reading this short essay, I want to tackle some things that we, as Christians, should consider as we go through our lives. What is God’s role in our lives? Most of us probably say: “Oh God should be the first, then family, friends, and so on.” But, do you really think that will work? Or you just go through things in your life just because majority of the “Christians” around you are doing the same thing? Having the chance to consider my own personal problems and how I see my own struggle around me, I found the very most efficient way to make God as the center of our lives. At the moment we open our eyes in the morning, we have to bear in mind that there is a battle going on. I mean spiritual battle. Now, how are we going to face these battles in our lives and how do we ask God to help us in these battles? There is one simple answer to this very simple question: Read the word of God!

Now, how does this answer the question of you being a real Christian? Do we call a person “Real Christian” just because he or she reads the Bible? Well, everyone can read the bible, that doesn’t mean they are already a Christian. It’s the conviction of the Holy Spirit and how we allow God speaks in our heart, and when we follow God words. We have to live our lives according to what the bible tells us. Meanwhile, I have mentioned that the typical thought of most Christian families regarding God is He should be first, then Family, Friends, and so on. However, this is not enough in the essence that God is positioned in the beginning and then when it comes to family, he is out. It must be this way: God alone, family and God, Friends and God, works and God. God must be in everywhere around you. You, as sons of Christ, must consider Him in EVERYTHING you do. When we do this, we have our armor as we go through our battles in life. According to 1 John 5:5 who is it that overcomes the world? Only the one who believes that Jesus is the son of God. When we believe in Jesus Christ, it is expected that we follow his words, and to follow his words, we must READ the Bible everyday and meditate from it in order for us to hear what God wants us to do in our lives.

I hope this simple message will help us re-think about our lives and live according to what God wants us to be.

In Jesus name I pray, Amen.

Evangelizing a Profane World

As a believer, one of my biggest struggle in life is the difficulty of influencing the nonbelievers around me. I know with a hundred percent assurance that I can not do things on my own without Christ's presence in my life. While I was reading the passage 1 Peter 3:1, it says "But make sure in your hearts that Christ is Lord. Always be ready to give an answer to anyone who asks you about the hope you have. Be ready to give the reason for it. But do it gently and with respect," it made it clearer to me that I have to recognize Jesus as my Lord and that I have to set my faith in Christ as a believer so that when I have to face the secular world, I have a stronger foundation. Most of us Christian believers are so uptight with our own beliefs that when we are surrounded by non-believers, we feel intimated. When we hear them spitting unpleasant words, our faces switch from eating a sweet honey to a bitter lemon. Yes, it affects us to a point where we should be concern about them. It is not for us to take them in our hands, like a clay, and mold them into a figure that we want them to be. Our role as Christians is to water them in order for them to be soft so God can mold them into a refined-new believer.

Our generation is moving towards profanity, and that is just reality. I have to admit myself to that fact that no matter how much I try to insist my own Christian understanding to the world, it will never be heard unless I bring it to God. I pity the unbeliever. They need help. For us Christians, it is sad that we have our own world. A world where it is not as bad as the secular world. Little that we know that if we are sitting in our own comfort zone, we are more than sinning simply because we do not care about the people who mostly need our help. Faith without work is dead, as well all know.

So, to my brothers and sisters in Christ, I pray that we should give it a try to be around people who has not heard of the gospel. You never know how much it will bless you when you help God change lives one person at a time.

In Christ,
Junie

True Encouragement

As prayer center ministers, and as Christians, one aspect of our job is to offer encouragement to those suffering during difficult times. For me, it is easy to write a simple prayer message,  to tell someone I will be praying for them, or to share an encouraging Bible verse. Human contact and empathy may even encourage people for a short time. But this passage from AW Tozer convicted me:

“For it is not mere words that nourish the soul, but God Himself, and unless and until the hearers find God in personal experience they are not the better for having heard the truth. The Bible is not an end in itself, but a means to bring men to an intimate and satisfying knowledge of God, that they may enter into Him, that they may delight in His Presence, may taste and know the inner sweetness of the very God Himself in the core and center of their hearts.”

People who need encouragement do not need us, they do not need kind words or concerned smiles. They need God. David described this need eloquently, “As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, my God. My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God?” (Psalm 42: 1-2) This cry is true of every human—and especially true of those who are enduring hardship and suffering. Although the caring prayer messages are an important part of what we do, the most important part is leading people to Christ. Often, there is little we can say/do towards someone to directly impact this. But there is always one thing we can do—pray. Pray, not just for someone’s request, but pray that they will experience God like never before. This prayer, offered on behalf of the souls of others, is what will make the difference between a “nice ministry” and a powerful one.

Encouragement During the Storms of Life

Tonight, I would like to share with you one of my favorite passages in the Bible. It is Romans 8:28, 31, 35, 37 "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose... And what shall we say in response to this? If God is for us, then who can be against us?... Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?... No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us."
These verses greatly encourage me and I hope you too. It comforts me to know that even through the hardships in this life, God is still there loving us and working for the good of those He loves. Next time you feel overwhelmed or discouraged, I pray that you will remember these words and remember that no matter what God will always be there. He never changes or leaves us. We are not orphans, but rather His children.

Intense Prayer

"When we learn to come to God with an intensity that wrings the soul, then shall we know a power in prayer that most of us do not know" --R. A. Torrey

Having this sort of intensity is not something that comes very naturally for me. However, the Bible seems to show that God responds more powerfully to prayers offered up out of desperation, out of longing, out of anguish. Very often, my little soul is content to remain un-wrung and comfortable. But I've found that when I give up this selfish desire out of love, when I can allow love for someone else to break my heart to pieces and pray from that place, God answers with power. I encourage you today to not pray just as a habit or for your job or for CSER, but to cry out to God on behalf of a hurting world who needs the love of a Savior more than anything else.

How To Pray

Teach Me To Pray by Andrew Murray

"After worshiping God in prayer with praise and thanksgiving, prepare yourself for intercessory prayer by waiting on God in meditative, prayerful Bible study. Read a few verses from the Bible. You will have material enough from the Word. Prayerful study of the Bible is indispensable for powerful prayer."

Even if He Doesn't

Daniel 3:14-18

"Nebuchadnezzar said to them, 'Is it true, Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego, that you refuse to serve my gods or to worship the gold statue I have set up? I will give you one more chance to bow down and worship the statue I have made when you hear the sound of the musical instruments.
But if you refuse, you will be thrown immediately into the blazing furnace. And then what god will be able to rescue you from my power?' Shadrach, Meshach, and Abednego replied, 'O Nebuchadnezzar, we do not need to defend ourselves before you. If we are thrown into the blazing furnace, the God whom we serve is able to save us. He will rescue us from your power, Your Majesty. But even if he doesn’t, we want to make it clear to you, Your Majesty, that we will never serve your gods or worship the gold statue you have set up.'"

About 2600 years ago, three brave men made their decision to worship God. Although these three men have faith that their God is able to save them, they were resolved to worship Him even if it means death by the fiery furnace. They were not willing to give their worship to anyone else! What an incredible amount of faith!

However, these three men were not the only ones who had such resolution to worship God. Abraham resolved to worship God and was willing to sacrifice his one and only son, Issac; Moses resolved to worship God and was willing suffer with his people although he could have enjoyed the richness of the Egyptian Kingdom; David chose to worship God and placed his faith in Him when David faced Goliath despite the possibility of losing his life as a young lad. The disciples of Jesus were resolved to worship God even in the midst of persecution. The people of God worshiped Him despite the circumstances that surround them!

Often times when we read about these stories, we feel inspired to live a life to worship God. We feel the passion stirring within us to worship Him. Yet, in reality our passion just fades away too soon. What kind of experience did these people have which allowed them to live such radical lives? How did they become such persevering worshipers? Namely this: "...Though overwhelmed by many troubles, [a persevering worshiper] is overwhelmed even more by the beauty of God."-Matt Redman, The Unquenchable Worshipper
Though suffering, these people were able to worship God because they have experienced God Himself. They were able to withstand trials and suffering because they were overwhelmed even more by the beauty and worthiness of God Himself! They chose to worship God because God is worthy and bigger than all that they are facing!

In our society today, we all face a similar situation that those persevering worshipers face, namely our decision to worship God. "Situations change for better and for worse, but God's worth never changes." We must choose for ourselves whom we want to worship today! Yet, just like those who have gone before us, our worship must be fueled by the revelation of God Himself. Therefore, don't give up in seeking God in your quiet time and devotions! Be prayerful always!

"Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles. And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God." -- Hebrews 12:1-2

Beauty in the Eyes of God

To my Christian sisters,
I was just having some thoughts on beauty today, and I think that it would be interesting to share with all of you.
Have you frequently asked yourself in front of the mirror: “Do I look beautiful today? Is my hair looking okay? Are my clothes matching?” Then, you walk out of the door, catching a lady with her hair perfectly done, dresses in designed outfit, wears high heels and looking gorgeous. And you ask yourself again: “I wish I look just like that girl.”
I don’t know much about your situation, but I have been there. Before I came to know Christ, I was always insecure about myself. I defined what beauty is about by looking at models that are 6 feet tall, extremely thin in magazines. Surprisingly, I can still be beautiful without meeting those standards. What else can I ask for since God has given me this life on earth to know my wonderful parents, and my fellow friends with my own eyes.  What else can I ask for since God has given me these legs to walk to wherever he calling me for. What else can I ask for since God has given me these hands which bring happiness when I help a person.
1 Peter 3:3-4 says: “Your beauty should not come from outward adornment, such as braided hair and the wearing of gold jewelry and fine clothes. Instead, it should be that of your inner self, the unfading beauty of a gentle and quiet spirit, which is of great worth in God's sight.” How amazing is that what determines beauty is our personality and characteristics instead of whether we look like a model.
There are so many perspectives on beauty, but ours is shaped by God and his teachings. Therefore, we should not let the world affect how we see our beauty and how we honor God.

Praying to Please God

"And now, may the God of peace, who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, equip you with all you need for doing his will."
--Hebrews 13:20

Surely this benediction , prayed for all of us, teaches us in a very practical way both how to pray and how to be prayed for.

9/26/2011

Brother Lawrence was a simple monk whose job it was to wash the dishes of the monastery. However, he figured out bring glory to God and enjoy deep fellowship with Him while doing even menial labor. Brother Lawrence once wrote, "In the way of God, thoughts count for little, love is everything. nor is it needful that we should have great things to do. We can do little things for God....It is enough for me to pick up but a straw from the ground for the love of God." I wish I had Brother Lawrence's attitude about straw-picking up!

Brother Lawrence shared his secret, writing, "How very much shorter and easier it is to do our common business purely for the love of God, to set his consecrating mark on all we lay hands to, and thereby foster the sense of His abiding presence by constant communion of our heart with His!...my only business is to live as though there were none but He and I in the world."

Brother Lawrence figured out how to practically live out a life-changing principle: There is no greater satisfaction than a life lived solely for God's glory. He understood what Paul meant when he wrote, "Whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him." (Col 3:17) It is so freeing to know that what I do matters little compared to how I do it. I encourage you who are reading this to cultivate an attitude which resembles Christ's, who, as Paul wrote, "..humbled himself by becoming obedient to death--even death on a cross!"(Phil 2:8). If we are able to cloak all our actions with Christ-like humility and love, Paul says that we will "shine among them like stars in the sky" (Phil 2:15). What better way to share Christ's love with the world?
